There are lots of people out there feeling repeatedly unhappy with their work. Longing for fresh insights and energy in their lives in order to want to keep going. Maybe longing for more time with their loved ones too.
For all, there’s a longing for things to be different.
If you’re one of these people, what could you do to create the change you’re looking for? What are the options available? Now, in the near future, and maybe in the long term perspective?
And then on the other hand you might be resisting change because “you know what you have but not what you’re going to get” is the safer option? Or maybe you’re doubting your own ability to create change?
Where are you going?
It boils down to where you are now and where you’re going, I think. Like in Alice in Wonderland – if you don’t know where you’re going it really doesn’t matter which path you take.
So in order to seriously consider the options, you need to know your goals and aspirations. Once you do that, the change will be your only way to get there. And you’ll overcome your doubts and start taking actions toward it. Stick around for that post too. 😊
Now, the options for you if you’re unhappy in your current space would typically be:
- Switch positions within the company you’re currently at
- Switch company – keep similar position
- Switch company and position
- Start own business in the traditional economy
- Buy a business
- Go back to school
- Study online
- Start own business online
Option 1-6 are traditional and option 7-8 are within the new digital economy. Let’s start with options 7-8.
Study online is a faster way to success than the traditional schools, where you go and sit in a classroom at certain times during the week listening to somebody lecturing IRL.
The online study can be done anywhere at any time really. As long as you have a device and an Internet connection you’re good. You could even study on the bus or train on your way to work and back and in that way get a couple of hours worth of knowledge every day.
You can study with a school on the other side of the globe. The Internet unites you. And you can apply your knowledge fairly quickly depending on the topic.
You wouldn’t have to take a whole semester of “Theory and Method” training for every topic that you chose.
Start own business online
This is to many people a scary and unknown field. And it definitely was for me too. And you have to go from the mindset of an employee to the mindset of an entrepreneur.
I tried my own thing for a while, both in the traditional way and online, but it didn’t take off. And now I know why. I didn’t have the proper skills to do it! Now that I do, the difference is huge.
I decided to combine the study online option with starting a business online.
There are lots of options as to how to go about it.
- You can become an affiliate for the likes of e g Amazon, where you connect buyers and product/service providers and earn a commission.
- You can start an eCommerse business and source own products for sale.
- And you can create a business on your own interests and experiences.
I’d say any of these are possible if you’re able to find mentors and structures to learn from. My business wouldn’t thrive until I got that kind of help.
I then decided to go into affiliate marketing because I wanted to sell already proven products and services to start with. And earn an income that could help me build my business while I was learning it all.
To me it’s been a life changing decision really – to join the SFM so that I could get the exact help I needed. (If you’d like to get the video series that got me started, feel free to sign up here and I’ll send it to you, ok?) (Or, if you’d like to know more about the SFM, check out this page.)
This option for change will bring a lifestyle change as well. You’re going to be able to work from anywhere in the world, since the online busienss is…online. Again, all you need is a device and an Internet connection.
This option then comes with a freedom lifestyle not available in the below alternatives.
You do need to invest both time, money and effort to get there. Just making sure you don’t miss that detail. And my advise to you if you’re sseriously considering a change like, this is to start saving up for your education, look for the best possible training and support and then allocate at least 1 hour per day to move up the skills ladder.
Now let’s look into your traditional options.
Switch positions within the company you’re currently at
If you really like the place you’re at, this is a great opportunity to get som fresh insights and energy going in your life. And it’s kind of safe too. You know what you have and basically what you’re going to get.
And no big lifestyle change either. That might be a safe and desirable option if you like your way of life already.
Switch company – keep a similar position
If you don’t love the place you’re at, but you want to keep doing what you’re doing, this is a great option.
A little bit more scary than the previous option perhaps, since you don’t know exactly what you’re getting, right? But the “same position” part is fairly safe.
Switch company and position
Now this is challenging. In this option you’re really putting yourself out there. But you’re so determined that you need a change, that this just has to happen.
Roll up your sleeves and go for it!
Start own business in the traditional economy
I’m sure most of us have thought about starting an own business at least a couple of times over the years. But many times we have stoped ourselves because of the problem of not knowing how to do it. Lacking skills. Or even if the ideas we have are good enough.
And all the financing that need to be in place have finally put an end to these dreams.
In most cases that’s true too. Starting a business, e g a café or a retail business requires not only big monetary investments but huge investments in time. Taking risks.
But it’s a tempting option to become your own boss and work on your own terms, even if it means spending even more time away from home.
Buy a business
If you have the financial muscles and the know how this is a great option. What are you waiting for? It’ll probably require quite a bit of time out of the house, depending on the line of business we’re talking about, but hey – it’s a kind of freedom option.
The customer base is there, the infrastructure and the employees too. Just hop on board and shape it to fit your goals.
Go back to school
Going back to the tradtional schools, like college or university is great – learning new skills is an awesome investment in yourself and your future.
But the time aspect is an issue here. Before you can be up and running with your new skills there will be months or even years before they can monetise. Unless you decide to study part time. That could be an option. The monetising part will be longer but at least you might earn a part time income in the meantime.
A final word
All of the above options require your time, money and effort to create the change you’re looking for, ok? There are no shortcuts in that sense.
And change is usually never easy. But it’s very often worth it in the end, because you learn and grow in the process.
It’s all about how courageous you are, how devoted you are to your goals, and how willing you are to really invest to get where ever it is that you’re going. Wouldn’t you agree?
Maybe self-confidence and self-esteem is holding you back as well? Then stick around for my post on those topics too. 😉
But rest assured – all of the mentioned challenges can be overcome with the right help, tools and mindset. You just need to find it.
All the best and talk soon!
