My top 5 working from home tips for staying healthy, focused, and productive throughout the day

Now, I know working from home might be a privilege you’re not able to enjoy right now. But, listen – there ARE options for everyone out there in the online world, so you may very well be in your home office enjoying the freedom of working from your laptop in the near future. Besides – these tips apply even if you’re at the office, ok?

So that you DON’T end up snacking on crap, sitting indoors all day and procrastinating the things you’d promised yourself you’d do. (Note! These tips are based solely on my personal knowledge and experience. Any association to real scientific data is a pure coincidence.)

  1. Plan your day.

    Yes, that’s right. Start by setting goals; at least one and a maximum of three. They should be realistic and measurable, i e SMART.

    Then make a promise to yourself to fulfill them TODAY. These goals will help keep you focused.

    DON’T get distracted by social media or watering your plants!

  2. Eat healthy food at regular intervals.

    “What? Shouldn’t working from home be a VIP lane to eating-whatever-you-like-whenever-you-like-without-anyone-finding-out?” Nope. Sorry. (The only one you’d be cheating is yourself. Nobody else could give a f**k about you gobbling stuff down)

    No. Feeding your body and mind crap is not an option. It sound really posh, I know, but sugar simply isn’t an energy boost – it’s an energy drain. And usually sweet stuff is what we tend to feed ourselves for treats, right?

    So you need to give yourself slow carbs, lean protein and soft fats.

    “Oh, STOP IT! How BORING!” (I told you this is posh.) But you’ve just gotta suck it up. Your body and mind functions sooo much better on the good stuff, and you know it.

  3. Work out.

    Whether you’re doing it at home, outside or at the gym, make sure your body (and as a consequence your mind) gets this. They’re going to thank you for it. And your stress levels will drop, which means your actual brain is going to thank you too.

    Get into a routine of doing these three every week: cardio, strength and core. And you’re going to find your focus increasing and your productivity following closely behind as a consequence.

  4. Get out of the house!

    Enjoy the outdoors; take a walk, have your coffee outside or run meetings from your phone or laptop in your favorite garden chair.

    “Why?” You’re asking. It’s grey, windy, and there are cats and dogs coming down from the heavens.

    Well, you see, fresh air and the lumen (light) outdoors always beats the stuffy, dark indoors. And as human beings we NEED that light for our mind and bones to strengthen.

    But, what’s that got to do with your work day? Because of the above, being outside WILL refuel your body and mind with creative, productive energy. And besides – getting out of the house gives you some what of a deadline to work towards, it breaks up the day, AND it gives you perspective on things.

  5. And finally – Work!

    DO stuff. Get sh*t done! Take decisions, take action, produce. Keep the promises you made to yourself in the morning!

    It’s like all of the above lay the foundation for a perfect working day. You’ll feel enormously proud of yourself after a day like this. As opposed to snacking on crap, sitting indoors all day and procrastinating the things you’d promised yourself you’d do.

A final word

When you get your online business up and running you won’t have to work 8-10 hour-days. So if you think this is a crappy list because it includes more non-work than work in your opinion, then it’s either because it IS (crappy) or because you’re not yet at a stage in life where you have the freedom of choice: when you work, where you work or for whom.
